First off, you put this on in the warmth of your home and when you get to the break, you won't freeze your nips while you put on your suit. Win #1.
The instructions say to let it charge for 2 hours and to disconnect it to preserve battery life. It even has a green light to tell you when it's charged. I've used mine about a half dozen times with no issues. Following the instructions might be the pro tip here.
The first time I turned it on before paddling out and left it on High until the battery ran out. It lasted 90 mins and became uncomfortably hot. Everyone else was shivering with their hands under their armpits, so I still felt way ahead.
Next time I figured out the pattern for controlling it while it's under your suit. Pretty simple actually: Press and it vibrates once for Hot. Press and it vibrates twice for Medium. Press and hold and it will vibrate 6 times and turn off. Press again and it's back on and Hot. D'oh!
Now I paddle out with it off and it's not until I'm sitting that I even consider turning it on Medium. When a set comes I turn it off. And toward the end of the session I'll dip into the Hot setting if I'm feeling a bit tired or at all chilly. The battery outlasts me now, and I find I even turn it on after I get out of the water to stay warm while I'm rinsing and securing the board.
The only downside is my buddy would get cold and paddle in before I was ready. So I just bought him one for his birthday!

It was a dream the first 6 or so times out last winter. Actually too hot sometimes.First paddle out with it on this winter last weekend and it is non-functional without any apparent cause. I understand there is a 6 month warranty which as you are only likely to use this vest over the coldest winter months is woefully inadequate and suggests Quiksilver where aware of some issues.
Very disappointing. This is an expensive piece of kit and has obviously been constructed cheaply. I would not recommend this or even future similar products from Quiksilver.

this vest is great when it works. but it will not last more than a year. my brothers didnt nor did a mates and nor did mine. after no help from quicksilver and had to buy a new battery, still no joy. i now stay away from quicksiler products when possible as their customer service stinks

I bought this on a whim when I had some extra money. So glad I did. It's amazing how heating the lower back can warm the entire body. It's almost like you can feel the warmth flowing from your core outward through your body. It is important to keep the contacts and seals clean and away from salt water before and after use. Also important to charge it correctly. I turn it on high while I put my wetsuit on. By the time I get to the water I'm almost too hot and I adjust it to the warm setting. Once I'm in the water I adjust it accordingly...sometimes high (usually when I'm waiting for sets), sometimes warm, sometimes off. The large one button operation makes it super easy and the vibration lets you know what setting beforehand. The only thing that could make this product better is if they adapted and created booties and gloves with the same technology (my toes and fingers still get a little chilly). But, surfing with the vest is still WAY better than without.

warranty department does not answer phone i have called six times. i have talked to customer service but warranty department is waiting for warranty to run out to return call name is paul according to recording never talked to him.

BUT I lost the special CONTROLLER piece and so I desperately hope that Quicksilver helps me replace it.

It is nice to have a little extra warmth when it gets really cold during the winter or just to have a little extra warmth when you are just wearing a jacket and the water temp. suddenly drops during the warm season. Great product for multiple uses.

Rinse Garment and Controller with fresh water after each use.
Ensure that all connection points on the Controller body and controller cap are free of debris
After and before each use in order to prevent corrosion and retain maximum battery life.
In the event that corrosion occurs, use rubbing alcohol to clean on connection points and remove corrosion.
Due to the highly corrosive properties of salt water, it may be necessary to clean the connections with low grit sand paper. Occasionally, as with any electronic products used in water, there have been a very small number of batteries that have gone prematurely bad.
