Kelly Wins Bells!
1st Win at the Famed Spot Since 1994

April 20, 2006.  Seemingly out to prove that seven world titles and the most decorated career in the history of surfing weren’t some kind of fluke, Kelly Slater is on an absolute tear this year.  He backed up his dominating win last month at the Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast with a dramatic victory at Bells Beach.  Ringing the famed Bell for the first time since 1994 was an emotional experience for the champ.  “I didn’t surf at all until I got here,” he said. “Wasn’t even sure I was going to make it to Bells this year, but I’m stoked I did. “

You heard that right folks, before this contest he hadn’t surfed for a month!  And even though he’s now got a giant 1000 point lead in the ASP ratings, he’s still toying with us by not committing to making a run at an 8th world title this year.  “In a way (it makes sense to go for the title) but it might also be fun not to,” he said.

What is certain, however, is that he’s surfing better than he or anyone else ever has.  His 33rd win of his career tied him with Tom Curren for most ASP world tour victories in history.  Kelly grew up idolizing Curren so the record was a big deal for him.  “I’m just happy with that and to do it and Bells Beach is ironic since this is where Curren won his first title- he’s just always been my hero so I’d like to dedicate this win to Tom.”

Kelly took out former Bells winner Joel Parkinson in the final by nailing his best score of the event, a 9.67.  Despite riding a 6-1 in beefy and wind scalloped 10 foot waves, he managed to pull off one of the best turns ever seen at Bells – an ultra-critical, rail grab-speed carve in the lip.

Congratulations, Kelly, from everyone at Quiksilver!
